EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS WITH DISABILITIES: BEKWAI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY HOLDS SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP

In a bid to promote inclusivity and empower marginalized groups, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) under the Bekwai Municipal Assembly (BMA) organized a sensitization workshop targeting women and girls with disabilities, including mental disabilities. The event, held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, catered to communities such as Ahwiren, Dadiase, Aboaso, and Asakyiri at Bekwai.


The workshop, a collaborative effort spearheaded by SWCD officers namely Mary Pokuaa Ofori, Emmanuel Adusei Poku, Evans Owusu Addai, Emmanuel Agyare, and Francisca Awuah, aimed to address the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in these communities. Throughout the day-long event, participants engaged in discussions, interactive sessions, and awareness-raising activities focused on building resilience, fostering self-esteem, and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities.

Mary Pokuaa Ofori, one of the facilitators, emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment where women and girls with disabilities feel valued and empowered to actively participate in community life. "Our goal is to break down barriers and stereotypes, and ensure that every woman and girl, regardless of their abilities, has equal access to opportunities and resources," she remarked.

The workshop covered various topics, including health and hygiene, education and skills development, rights awareness, and access to social services. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, facilitating a collective dialogue aimed at identifying practical solutions and strategies for inclusion.

Emmanuel Adusei Poku highlighted the significance of partnerships and collaboration in advancing the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. "By working together with community leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone can thrive," he emphasized.

The event concluded with a commitment from participants to continue advocating for the rights of women and girls with disabilities and to actively promote inclusivity within their communities. The SWCD officers reiterated their ongoing support and pledged to provide follow-up assistance and resources to ensure the sustainability of initiatives aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities.
