The Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate has successfully organized the grand finale of the Municipal Reading and Quiz Festival on Thursday, 12th March 2026, at the forecourt of the Directorate’s Office.
The festival formed part of the Directorate’s interventions to improve literacy skills among learners and promote a strong reading culture in basic schools across the municipality.
The competition featured ten (10) schools representing the ten (10) circuits within the municipality. Learners competed in various categories, including the Lower Primary Reading Competition and the JHS Reading Competition.
The initiative was introduced following concerns identified during School Performance Appraisal Meetings (SPAM) that revealed challenges with reading abilities among learners, which had contributed to poor academic outcomes, including low performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
In the Lower Primary Reading Competition, the winners were as follows:
- First Position: Lovia Essuman Afra – Anwainkwanta Circuit
- Second Position: Mukarama Hussein – Bekwai North Circuit
- Third Position: Mary Akoto Asante – Abodom Circuit
In the JHS Reading Competition, the results were:
- First Position: Cecilia Antwi – Bekwai South Circuit
- Second Position: Theophilus Nana Agyekum – Dominase Circuit
- Third Position: Francis Oppong Gyekye – Anwainkwanta Circuit
The event brought together education stakeholders, teachers, parents, and learners who witnessed impressive displays of reading ability and confidence among the participating pupils.
The Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate commended all participating schools, teachers, and learners for their commitment and encouraged continued efforts towards improving reading proficiency and academic performance.
