EMPOWERING GIRLS THROUGH VOCATIONAL EDUCATION: A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE BY BEKWAI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

In a concerted effort to address the imperative of girl child education, particularly emphasizing vocational training, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly (BMA) organized an enlightening session on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023. Held at Amanhyia within the Bekwai Municipality, the event sought to underscore the significance of education in empowering young girls and fostering community development.

Led by dedicated SWCD officers namely Mary Pokuaa Ofori, Vivian Appiah Kwabi, Ebenezer Atta Mensah, Ruth Adutwumwaa, and Emmanuel Agyare, the session proved to be a pivotal platform for engaging with community members and stakeholders.

The discourse centered on the multifaceted benefits of educating girls, with a particular emphasis on vocational education. Mary Pokuaa Ofori, a seasoned SWCD officer, elucidated on the transformative potential of vocational training in equipping girls with practical skills essential for their economic independence and societal contribution. She underscored the importance of breaking gender stereotypes and providing equal opportunities for girls to pursue vocational education, thereby enabling them to thrive in diverse fields such as entrepreneurship, technology, and craftsmanship.

Vivian Appiah Kwabi, another facilitator, highlighted the intrinsic link between girl child education and community development. She emphasized that educated girls are catalysts for positive change within their families and communities, advocating for inclusive educational policies and support systems to ensure their holistic development.

Ebenezer Atta Mensah delved into the challenges hindering girls' access to education, ranging from socio-economic barriers to cultural prejudices. Ruth Adutwumwaa shared inspiring success stories of girls who have excelled in vocational education, debunking misconceptions and illustrating the transformative impact of education on their lives.

Emmanuel Agyare concluded the session by reiterating the BMA's commitment to promoting girl child education and urged community members to actively support initiatives aimed at empowering girls through education.

The event culminated in interactive discussions and brainstorming sessions, fostering a sense of collective responsibility and commitment towards advancing the educational prospects of girls within the Bekwai Municipality.
