The Bekwai Municipal Assembly held its General Assembly Meeting on Wednesday, 25th February 2026, at the Assembly Hall in Bekwai. The meeting was convened to deliberate on two principal agenda items: the election of a Presiding Member and the creation of Sub-Committees of the Assembly.
Three Honorable Members contested the position of Presiding Member: Hon. Daniel Kwadwo Anokye of the Bogyawe/Ankaase Electoral Area, Hon. Bruce Kofi Asante, the incumbent, and Hon. Asare Baffour of the Asanso-Feyiase Electoral Area. At the end of the first round of voting, Hon. Bruce Kofi Asante obtained 25 votes, Hon. Daniel Kwadwo Anokye secured 19 votes, and Hon. Asare Baffour received 7 votes.
As no candidate attained the constitutionally required two-thirds majority, a run-off was conducted between the two leading candidates. The run-off results indicated that Hon. Daniel Kwadwo Anokye secured 25 votes, while Hon. Bruce Kofi Asante obtained 24 votes, with one ballot rejected. Despite the closely contested outcome, neither candidate achieved the mandatory two-thirds majority required by law to be elected as Presiding Member.
Since the Presiding Member was not elected, the Assembly could not proceed with other scheduled business, including the creation of Sub-Committees. In accordance with the relevant statutory provisions, a fresh election will be conducted within the next ten (10) days to elect a Presiding Member, after which the Assembly will resume its normal functions.
