In a bid to foster inclusivity and empower marginalized groups, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development at the Bekwai Municipal Assembly organized an advocacy program aimed at enhancing the participation of women and girls with disabilities in decision-making processes. The event, held on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023, targeted communities including Kokotro, Abodom, Bogyawe, and Aduam within the Bekwai Municipality.

Led by two Senior Development Officers, Mary Pokuaa Ofori and Emmanuel Adusei Poku, along with Evans Owusu Addai, Mass Education Officer, the programme sought to raise awareness about the importance of involving women and girls with disabilities in decision-making processes at both local and broader community levels.

The initiative highlighted the need for a more inclusive approach to development, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by women and girls with disabilities in accessing resources, education, and healthcare, among other essential services. By empowering this demographic to actively participate in decision-making processes, the aim is to ensure that their voices are heard, their rights protected, and their needs adequately addressed.

Throughout the advocacy programme, participants engaged in discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions aimed at building their capacity to advocate for their rights effectively. Topics covered included disability rights, advocacy strategies, leadership skills, and accessing support services available within the community and beyond.

Moreover, the event provided a platform for women and girls with disabilities to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations openly. By fostering dialogue and collaboration between community members and stakeholders, the programme aimed to catalyze positive change and promote inclusivity within the Bekwai Municipality.

In conclusion, the Advocacy Programme organized by the Bekwai Municipal Assembly's Department of Social Welfare and Community Development signifies a crucial step towards empowering women and girls with disabilities and promoting their active participation in decision-making processes. Through concerted efforts and continued support from all stakeholders, it is hoped that such initiatives will contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all members of the community.
