In a proactive move to address the issue of streetism within the Bekwai Municipality, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) organized an educational event on Friday, October 6th, 2023, in Dominase. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the challenges and consequences of streetism, while also providing avenues for support and intervention.
Facilitated by SWCD Officers Mary Pokuaa Ofori, Vivian Appiah Kwabi, Ebenezer Atta Mensah, Ruth Adutwumwaa, and Emmanuel Agyare, the event was marked by a collaborative effort to engage the local community in discussions and solutions regarding this pressing social issue.
Streetism, characterized by children living and working on the streets, often without adequate adult supervision or support, poses significant risks to their well-being, development, and future prospects. It is a complex issue influenced by socio-economic factors, family dynamics, and access to education and support services.
During the educational session, attendees were enlightened about the root causes and consequences of streetism, ranging from poverty and family breakdown to lack of access to education and social protection services. The SWCD officers emphasized the importance of early intervention and community involvement in addressing this issue effectively.
Moreover, the event served as a platform for stakeholders, including community leaders, parents, and concerned citizens, to come together and brainstorm sustainable solutions. Discussions revolved around the importance of family strengthening programs, access to education, vocational training, and psycho-social support for affected children and families.
SWCD officers provided information about existing support services available for vulnerable children and families within the municipality, encouraging community members to utilize these resources and report cases of streetism for timely intervention.
The initiative underscored the commitment of the Bekwai Municipality and its partners to safeguarding the rights and well-being of every child, ensuring that they have access to a safe and nurturing environment conducive to their growth and development.
As the community continues to grapple with the multifaceted challenges of streetism, initiatives like these serve as a beacon of hope, fostering collaboration and collective action towards a brighter future for all residents of the Bekwai Municipality.
