The Baakoye Cooperative Cocoa Farmers and Marketing Union Limited, in collaboration with AGRITERRA, has initiated a four-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program aimed at enhancing the livelihood skills of its members through crop diversification. This initiative underscores the union’s commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and improving the economic resilience of its cocoa farmers.

The program, which commenced on Tuesday, 11th June 2024, is being held in the Conference Room of the Bekwai Community ICT Center. Holland Green Tech Ghana has been enlisted as the resource team, bringing their expertise to the forefront of this training endeavor.

Participants in the training include key stakeholders from the union and agricultural sectors. Among them are Mr. Opoku Acheampong Emmanuel, the Union President, and Mr. Opoku Isaac, the Union Manager. Additionally, 25 lead farmers from the union, two Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) officers, and two Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) extension agents are actively participating in the program.

This collaborative effort aims to equip these lead farmers with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in crop diversification, enabling them to disseminate this information effectively to other union members. By doing so, the initiative seeks to reduce the dependency on cocoa farming alone and introduce alternative crops that can provide additional sources of income.

The training covers a range of topics, including the selection of suitable crops for diversification, best practices in crop management, and sustainable agricultural techniques. The hands-on approach adopted by Holland Green Tech Ghana ensures that participants gain practical experience, which is crucial for successful implementation at the community level.

Mr. Opoku Acheampong Emmanuel expressed his optimism about the program's impact, stating, "This training is a significant step towards empowering our farmers with the necessary skills to diversify their crops. It not only enhances their income potential but also contributes to the sustainability of our agricultural practices."

The partnership between Baakoye Cooperative and AGRITERRA reflects a broader commitment to supporting farmers through education and capacity-building initiatives. As the training progresses, it is expected that the knowledge and skills gained will cascade down to the wider farming community, fostering a more resilient and diversified agricultural sector in the region.

The program will conclude on Friday, 14th June 2024, with a session to evaluate the training's effectiveness and plan for subsequent follow-up activities to ensure the sustained application of the learned skills.
