In a concerted effort to combat the alarming rates of teenage pregnancy plaguing the Bekwai Municipality, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) organized an educational workshop on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The workshop, held at Sesekro, aimed to raise awareness and impart crucial knowledge on teenage pregnancy prevention and mitigation strategies.

Led by a team of dedicated SWCD staff members, including Emmanuel Adusei Poku, Mary Pokuaa Ofori, Ebenezer Atta Mensah, Francisca Awuah, and Ruth Adutwumwaa, the workshop addressed various facets of the teenage pregnancy crisis. Through interactive sessions and informative presentations, participants gained insights into the underlying causes, consequences, and preventive measures associated with teenage pregnancy.

Emmanuel Adusei Poku, a key facilitator, emphasized the importance of comprehensive sex education and access to reproductive health services in empowering adolescents to make informed choices. Mary Pokuaa Ofori highlighted the role of parental guidance and community support systems in nurturing responsible behavior among young people.

Ebenezer Atta Mensah delved into the socio-economic factors contributing to teenage pregnancy, stressing the need for holistic approaches that address poverty, gender inequality, and lack of educational opportunities. Francisca Awuah underscored the significance of peer education programs in promoting healthy relationships and dispelling myths surrounding contraception and sexual health.

Ruth Adutwumwaa concluded the workshop with a call to action, urging community members to actively engage in advocacy efforts and create safe spaces where adolescents can seek guidance and support without fear of stigma or discrimination.

The workshop garnered enthusiastic participation from community members, including parents, educators, and local leaders, reflecting a collective commitment to addressing the teenage pregnancy epidemic in the Bekwai Municipality. As stakeholders continue to collaborate and implement targeted interventions, there remains hope for a future where adolescents can thrive free from the risks and consequences of early parenthood.
