The Ghana Education Service through the Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate has organized a Reading and Quiz Festival for basic schools across the various circuits in the municipality as part of efforts to address challenges affecting academic performance.

The initiative follows concerns over the municipality’s low performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over the past three years. In response, the Directorate organized School Performance Appraisal Meetings (SPAM) at the circuit level to identify possible factors contributing to the decline in performance.

One major challenge identified during the appraisal meetings was the inability of many learners to read effectively, a situation that affects comprehension, classroom participation, and overall academic achievement.

To address this challenge, the Directorate introduced the Reading and Quiz Festival to promote a strong reading culture among learners, improve literacy skills, and encourage healthy academic competition among basic schools in the municipality.

The festival brought together learners from various schools across the circuits to demonstrate their reading abilities, comprehension skills, and general knowledge.

The grand finale of the competition is scheduled for Thursday, 12th March 2026, where finalists from the various circuits will compete for honours.

The Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate believes that the initiative will contribute significantly to improving learners’ literacy levels and ultimately enhance academic outcomes, particularly in preparation for future BECE examinations.
