The Bekwai Municipal Assembly through the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) from 22nd January 2026 to 17th February 2026 undertook education and sensitization programmes on streetism in selected communities within the Municipality to create awareness on the causes, effects and preventive measures against streetism.
The exercise was conducted in selected communities including Anwiankwanta, Kokofu, Asanso, Kokotro, Nerebehi, Dadiese and Dwoamin, reaching a total of 6,173 participants, comprising 2,737 males and 3,436 females.
The sensitization focused on the meaning and nature of streetism, its causes and effects on children, the importance of education, parental responsibilities, and the role of community members in protecting vulnerable children. Residents were encouraged to provide proper care and supervision for children, ensure regular school attendance, and report cases of child neglect, abuse and exploitation.
Community members were also educated on the need for collective responsibility among parents, traditional authorities, schools, community leaders and relevant institutions in addressing streetism and promoting child protection.
The exercise forms part of SWCD’s efforts to promote child rights, support vulnerable children and strengthen community participation in addressing social challenges within the Bekwai Municipality.
