Inclusion Ghana (IG) on Thursday, 27th April, 2023 engaged its stakeholders in the Bekwai Municipality at the Assembly Hall of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly. The meeting was meant to wrap up on a 3-year project carried out by IG in the municipality.

Inclusion Ghana is an Organization of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (PwIDDs) and their families (parents/caregivers). Established in 2009 with a Secretariat in Accra, IG works from national through to community level to promote the inclusion of PwIDDs in society, through awareness-raising, advocacy, and other targeted interventions.

In pursuit of the above, Inclusion Ghana, in March, 2020 commenced a 3-year project with parents/caregivers of persons with intellectual and development disabilities in the Bekwai Municipality. This was done in the Bekwai and Bosomtwe Districts of the Ashanti Region in collaboration with its partner organisation, Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana.

Subsequently, IG engaged more than one occasion key stakeholders including duty bearers, disability movement and community leadership. The project which officially ends in May, 2023 necessitated a debriefing session with key stakeholders on what has transpired over the past 3 years.

The debriefing session focused on the need for parents and caregivers of PwIDDs to protect and liaise with the Department of Social Welfare, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Education Service, relevant Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Religious and Traditional Leaders to ensure the wellbeing of PwIDD in their homes, communities and public spaces.

The media houses present were also tasked to contribute to reduction of discrimination and stigmatisation against PwIDDs and their families.

Inclusion Ghana is a member of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD). Autism Society of West Africa, Inclusion Africa, Inclusion International and Down Syndrome International.
